Routes to Your Licence

Depending on your age and the qualifications you hold so far the route you need to take to gain the relevant part of your licence changes. Below we have created an interactive navigational element to help show you what you need to do to gain your full licence. Motorcycle Categories:

AM- Mopeds ( 50cc or less )
A1Min age 17- Light Motorcycle ( 120cc to 125cc not exceeding 11kW, max speed 55MPH)
A2Min age 19- Motorcycle ( Above 245cc, between 20kW and 35kW )
AMin ag 24 (OR min 2 years FULL A2)- Motorcycle ( Above 595cc, above 50kW and 175kg weight )

The only reason you should take your A1 test is if you would like to ride without  L  plates and/or carry a pillion passenger, otherwise, it would be better to wait until you are 19 so you can move on to your A2 licence.

You must pass your motorcycle theory test before you can go on to take your 2 part practical A1 motorcycle test on a bike between 120cc and 125cc and not exceeding 11kW.

You must complete your compulsory basic training.

You cannot take your A2 licence until you are 19 years of age.

If you have been riding since you were 16 years of age it might be beneficial to take your CBT again at 18 then wait until you are 19 and take your 2 part practical motorcycle test on a bike of at least 395cc and between 25kW to 35kW. Doing it this way means you only need take two tests to gain your unlimited A category license instead of three, once at 19 years of age and again at 21.

You must pass your motorcycle theory test before you can go on to take your 2 part practical motorcycle test on a bike between 120cc and 125cc and not exceeding 11kW.
